Last year when I found out about Jean Paul Gaultier’s exhibit, From Sidewalk to Catwalk making a stop at San Francisco’s very own, de Young Museum, I was ecstatic! I have been a long time fan of his since a very dear friend of mine let me borrow her newly purchased Jean Paul Gaultier lace gown from Paris over 10 years ago.
Last Thursday, March 22, 2012, I was one of the many lucky who attended the press preview at the de Young Museum to not only walk the exhibit prior to opening two days later, but to hear and meet the talented designer himself. I also loved the eye candy of media attendees that dressed to impress for the occasion.
The exhibit featured Gaultier’s many famous pieces, from Madonna’s iconic cone bustier worn at her Blonde Ambition Tour to the little stuffed bear that started it all. The installation was certainly a unique one for the museum as faces projected on the mannequins brought them to life, TV monitors to showcase many runway shows of Gaultier and an actual revolving runway. I felt as if I were walking through a whimsical fantasy of haute couture gowns and pieces with the famous designer right beside me. I was captivated by the detail in almost every piece that I gravitated towards, especially ones of course, with lace and studs. Needless to say, not only was it a fashion filled morning for me, but it was one that I will always remember.
Jean Paul Gaultier – From Side Walk to Cat Walk will be at the de Young Museum until August 19, 2012. If you love fashion and want to see the incredible couture pieces you definitely will not want to miss this exhibit.
