Tinted Moisturizers vs. BB Creams

In my lovely 20’s dramatic eyes and a mixture of color for my shadows were the highlight of those years. But I didn’t pay too much attention to what was really important, and that’s my skin.  Now in my early 30’s, I strive for the flawless, more natural complexion but pay very close attention to the formulas and ingredients that I apply to my skin daily.  I love how beauty brands have created lightweight formulas to give you just that.  A formula that not only gives your skin the natural look but one that helps your overall complexion in the long run.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the dramatic increase in Tinted Moisturizers and BB Creams in the beauty scene and here are 6 various brands that we compared and decided which were the best bang for your buck in our Editor’s Pick.

Tinted moisturizer is a facial make up which moisturizes your skin along with giving it the coverage of a foundation with a super lightweight, build-able solution that includes an SPF protectant.

Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer (in Warm Radiance) definitely became one of my favorites.  What I absolutely loved about this particular formula was how it left my skin looking radiant and dewy without leaving the glittery, shimmer specs on my face.  The texture is lightweight and easily blends with my skin leaving a natural coverage and offers an SPF 20 protectant as well.  Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer comes in 5 various hues and is $42.00 for a 1.70 oz tube.

Dior’s HydraLife Pro-Youth Skin Tint (in #2) is ultra lightweight and the coverage is perfection.  At first, I thought the color was a tad bit dark for my complexion however, once applied, it blended with my skin tone evenly with very minimal use.  I have to say that even though I applied my daily moisturizer prior to using the skin tint, it did leave my skin feeling and looking healthy and natural with a very slight glow and subtle fragrant. Dior’s HydraLife Pro-Youth Skin Tint is limited to only 3 hues and is $40.00 for a 1.7 oz. tube.

Lorac’s protecTINT (in Tawny Temptress) is oil free and perfect for sensitive skin and almost all skin types.  Texture is creamy yet leaving a sheer, lightweight coverage on the skin while protecting the skin with SPF 30. It does leave a subtle glow to the skin however, I found the glow disappeared rather quickly.  Lorac’s protecTINT comes in 5 various hues and is $32.00 for a 1.3 oz tube.

TINTED MOISTURIZER EDITOR’S PICK: If I had to choose one from the above, I would go with Dior’s HydraLife Pro-Youth Skin Tint.  Although I was in love with Laura Mercier’s Illuminating Moisturizer and the radiant glow it left, I felt that Dior’s gave me more coverage with very minimal amount used and I simply liked how it felt on my skin.

BB Creams, (a.k.a. Beauty Balms or Blemish Balms) have become a new and most sought out product for past couple of years.  Although BB Creams act very similar to the tinted moisturizers, it does have added benefits for your skin such as firming, brightening, moisturizing and a higher level of SPF. The only downfall to BB Creams in my opinion is that some brands only have a very limited amount in hues.

3Lab’s Perfect BB (in #2) is what some critics claim to be the “holy grail” of BB Creams.  It has ingredients to firm and lift the skin while regenerating new skin cells, brightens the skin and what I liked the most about this product prior to trying it was the high SPF 40 it has to protect your skin.  Say goodbye to sunscreen prior to your make up!  I immediately noticed the texture and it did in fact feel slightly “balmy” and thick.  When applying the #2, I realized that it left my skin slightly lighter.  The coverage I thought was great and although it may have a slight heavy feel to my skin, I personally love the texture.  3Lab’s Perfect BB comes in 3 hues and is $95.00 for a 1.5 oz tube.

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream (in Light) is what you can say an all in 1 regimen for your face.  It protects with SPF 35, can be used to help prep and prime the skin, moisturizes and provides oil control as well.  The texture is again slightly thicker but does not feel heavy on the face.  Blends easily and evenly throughout your face and leaves a sheer coverage.  Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream comes in 4 hues and is $39.00 for a 1 oz tube.

Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream (in Light/Medium) is something you can buy at your local drug store.  The difference that I noticed immediately is how affordable it is and the quantity is more as well.  For a BB Cream, I noticed that the texture was ultra light and not thick or balmy like the others I reviewed and had the smallest amount of protectant of SPF 15.  The disadvantage for me on this product was the high potency of fragrance it left.  The coverage is sheer and leaves a matte finish to my skin.  Garnier’s Skin Renew BB Cream comes in 2 mixed hues and is $12.99 for a 2.5 oz tube.

BB CREAM EDITOR’S PICK: From the 3 that I reviewed, I would say that Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream takes the cake.  Although it has the smallest quantity, a very little amount goes a long way.

OVERALL REVIEW OF TINTED MOISTURIZER vs. BB CREAM: For the amount of time that took me to review these products, I would say that having one of each, a Tinted Moisturizer and BB Cream in your make up kit is definitely worth while.  If you plan on staying in or running a quick errand or two, use a tinted moisturizer.  If you plan on making a day out and about, I would use a bb cream for it’s higher SPF and added benefits to preserving your beautiful skin. What I love about the two products is how you can wear it alone or simply use to prep and prime your skin.
